Summary


The Assistant Controller is tasked with assisting the VP Financial Operations with all aspects of the Company’s Accounting, Finance, Treasury and Risk Management functions. The Assistant Controller manages and partners with the greater corporate accounting team including the Corporate Manager, Senior Corporate Accountants and Payroll and Benefit Manager.

Responsibilities


Overall Accounting and Financial Operations

  • Coordinate and review consolidated financial statement reporting packages, management level portfolio summaries and the periodic financial reporting for the Board.
  • Monitor, analyze and present monthly operating results against budget/reforecast.
  • Supervise the preparation of quarterly financial forecasts and the annual budget.
  • Coordinate and review consolidated financial reporting for lenders.
  • Manage the annual corporate audit, prepare the corresponding consolidated financial statements and assist with overall oversight of the property audits.
  • Manage the tax preparation process including partnering with external tax preparers to prepare the consolidated tax return and various K-1s.
  • Maintain the accounting chart of accounts.
  • Supervise the maintenance of the accounting software, Yardi, and assess opportunities to improve and automate processes.
  • Review processes on a continuous basis to ensure best practices and adherence to internal controls.
  • Manage the payroll function including assistance with benefit oversight and compliance.

 

Corporate Accounting

  • Partner with the Company’s outside tax firm to analyze tax strategy including the impact of transactions on cash flow and compliance with all applicable state and federal laws.
  • Coordinate, review and distribute quarterly tax estimates for the parent company.
  • Oversee treasury operations and overall cash management, reporting and forecasting. Communicate regularly with the VP Financial Operations and CFO regarding changes to the Company’s overall cash position and the impact of individual transactions on cash flow.
  • Partner with the investment team to update internal valuation and assess changes in market conditions for overall portfolio performance.
  • Coordinate and review periodic investor project reporting packages and the related accounting.
  • Oversee debt management including loan administration, portfolio maturity reporting, hedging positions and performance, and compliance reporting. Review quarterly covenant reporting and analyze the impact of forecasted activity on compliance.
  • Monitor the Company’s portfolio guarantees and related exposure upon changes in market conditions.
  • Oversee all technical accounting and provide assistance for complex transactions.
  • Prepare and oversee ad hoc reporting for executive management, leadership and the Board of Directors

Skills + Abilities


  • Excellent organizational and communication skills including presenting to executive management
  • Effective business writing skills
  • Proven history in the completion of annual operating budgets, monthly reports, and reforecasts
  • Strong technical and analytical skills
  • Ability to manage competing priorities and partner with the team to achieve those

Minimum Qualifications


  • 8+ years full time experience in commercial real estate or public accounting
  • Proficient in MS Word and Excel
  • Yardi experience preferred
  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance required
  • CPA preferred
  • Demonstrates professionalism in every aspect of work performance including collaborative, enthusiastic attitude
